One thing that has always bothered me in the Democratic Republic of Congo is the fact that the Congolese Army is Omni present in urban areas where they are most notorious in extorting and intimidating instead of going to fight insurgents and foreign rebels operating freely on Congolese soil.
The reason why I support the withdrawal of any support to the FARDC is because it’s first of all a army without integrity, moral and respect for the civilian population. This army also incorporates without remorse individuals accused of mass murder and wanted by the International Criminal Court. To even paint blacker its reputation, the FARDC is finger pointed for the killings of journalists and Human Rights activists. Availing any kind of help to the FARDC means that the United Nations through MONUC consent to everything that this army does.
The men in green uniforms in the Democratic Republic of Congo are known to be cowards when it comes to discharging their duties but worn of extreme audacity when it comes to interfere with the work of others especially journalists. When they are courageous enough to go to the battle, they spend the majority of their time looting, raping and sharing their booty.
By the way, Medecins Sans Frontières has just brought to light some very shocking revelations. They humanitarian organization confirms that it’s in possession of tangible proofs that the FARDC had used Measles Clinic as bait to kill civilians. According to the report, Congolese military men stormed a village where civilians were participating in a Measles campaign and shot indiscriminately at the civilians mostly women and children.
Despite the fact that the FARDC – Congolese National Army – has an all brigade and several battalion in the Kivu region, it has never gone to the height of successfully dislodging a rebel movement. Even with the help of foreign troops it has always remained a serious headache. That’s why the UN mission in the DR Congo- MONUC - decided to give a hand.
To preserve the peace accord between the DR Congo government and the former main rebel movements namely: RCD, MLC, RCD-ML, the MONUC had vowed to help stop armed groups interfering with the Peace accord signed in Sun City – South Africa -. In other to achieve that, it gives logistics support to the Congolese army through its peacekeeping branch comprised of military contingents from different countries.
The Monuc supports to the FARDC is sometimes translated into payment of allowances to soldiers, availing vehicles and communication equipments, sending peacekeepers to the frontline against armed groups etc. The Monuc contingents sometimes fight armed groups on their own.
Why for God sake would the most respected organization in the world participate in such an enterprise? Why has taken long to the UN to notice that its support to the FARDC was just diminishing its reputation? Alleged killers of journalists and Human Rights activists who put their lives on the line to do what the government could have done should be in cells not enjoying their time with UN resources.
