Though live footages of prominent political figure collapsing in front of an audience are rare but they are not inexistent. in fact they are very common in the developed world than back here in Africa. The latest western politician to have collapsed in front of cameras is Silvio Berlusconi. The syndrome this month crossed the Mediterranean Sea to land right in the heart of Africa (D.R.Congo).
It was in the afternoon of Wednesday 11th in the DRC’s power house (National Assembly). Athanase Matenda, the man in charge of the Economy docket and also acting Finance Minister since the demise of Philippe Futa in a French hotel room last October was (Athanase Matenda) was giving an explanation to some opposition MPs who were concerned about the unstoppable inflation and also the alleviation of the Congolese debt.
The man on the spot (Athanase Matenda) was yet to give a reasonable answer to questions asked to him when he started sweating profusely. Before the parliamentary television crew had the time to switch cameras, the minister had collapsed. Some of his colleagues who are also medical practitioners rushed to administer him first attention before being taken to the National Assembly’s dispensary. It’s only after he had been transferred to Kinshasa’s government main hospital that it was said that his malaise was due to work related stress.
The incident sent the all country in sheer fear since a couple of government officials have died to complications that have been linked to poison. The latest victim, Philippe Futa who happened also to have been the titular of the Finance docket died in unclear circumstances in France, the same night he arrived from Venezuela where he attended an international summit. Although the official version attributes his death to a heart attack, people in his circle refute those claims.
Athanase Matenda is now back to work and urges Congolese people to focus on ways of resolving economical and financial issues that the Country is facing instead of spending time bickering about his health. However some journalists in Kinshasa think that Matenda could be a victim of the alleged deadly poison that has sent to the grave his previous colleague.
The poison allegations seem to gain ground after the younger brother of the late Futa died just a couple of weeks after the burial of his minister brother. Words in Kinshasa have it that Athanase Matenda and his family members are warned about disclosing the Minister’s health information.
