After the announcement made by Kenyan Energy Minister, Kiraitu Murungi yesterday to endorse the electrical power management program proposed by the Kenya Power and Lighting Company. Many are wondering what will be left for Nairobi .
The move will see parts of the city missing electricity twice per week from 6 am to 6 pm starting from Thursday August 06. This is because Kenya relies entirely on hydroelectricity and since conservation of the environment rings no bell to some Kenyans and their leaders, most of power plants have been closed due to lack of water.

Regardeless of the program given by the Power company, many are already experiencing the worst of the city in the dark. Cold businesses being the worst hit are not the only one suffering. Talking to Hapamedia a cybercafé owner, Jane Nyokabi lamented the lack of electricity. “I haven't been able to operate since last week because of electricity” she says.
Once known as one of the most peaceful cities in the world and as U.S Secretary of States, Hillary Clinton praised it as one of the best cities to raise kids in the world, Nairobi is now losing it all. |
The etymology of the word Nairobi comes from a local tribe, Maasai's name meaning cool water. The name was given to what has become the East and Central Africa economic hub, when it was a small agglomeration along what is known today as Nairobi River . Nairobi has many exceptional particulars; it's the only city in the world that hosts a National Park. It also boast many species of birds like none other city. It's the only city below the equatorial line to accommodate the United Nations offices. It's also the capital city of the most powerful country in East and Central Africa .
What has just been said above can be considered as a eulogy of the city at its graveside. Many would ask why? Here are the answers.
The Nairobi national park is dying one. Its space has been occupied by the Human habitat. Human encroachement in the park is not only threatening the reduction of the surface but also reducing animal population.
Species of birds are going towards extinction because green areas and trees in the city are now a scarcity. When seen from above, bird species do not have ample living territories anymore.
In what concerns the United Nations Offices in the city. The stay won't be long anymore. The offices might shift countries maybe to Tanzania because of the now growing instability in the country. With the uncertainty observed on the bringing to justice atrocities experienced during and after the voting of 2007, the country might experience the same in 2012. In fact, at the beginning of the 2008, U.N staffs were on alert awaiting evacuation.
