Nairobi’s stony beautification

By Jerry Nguwa, Nairobi
sun, August 16, 2009

The Kenyan government shocked the country by announcing last week that due to water shortage experienced in the country it’s opting to beautify Nairobi city with pebbles and flowers in place of trees.

Announcing the news, government spokesman, Dr. Alfred Mutua took reporters on a tour of the city where the project is already being implemented. He also got the backing of the prime minister who publicly dismissed protest by former vice president Moody Awori during an event.

Many wonder if the move is to save water or accentuate the water shortage. Ecologists and concerned Kenyans are lobbying to halt the move. But the country’s leadership is not the kind to be deterred from it’s decision.

What remains to be seen is how benefiting the move is going to be.
