NAME: Rose Kanyange kabuye

BORN: Byumba 22 April 1961

CHILDREN: three

SPORT: Volley Ball

ACHIEVEMENT: Highest ranked woman in Rwandan military

Rose Kabuye was born Rose Kanyange in Byumba(Nort East Rwanda) on 22 April 1961 from a herder's family. His father was a wealthy man in the community according to the head of cows he owned. Her family fled to Uganda at the end of the same year due to persecution orchestrated by the Anti Tutsi war lead by Grégoire KAYIBANDA.

The family settled in the Nakivale refugee camp where Rose went to primary school. She later moved to Kampala for her secondary education.
1982:
Enrolled at Makerere University for a political science bachelor degree curriculum. All along those years Rose held Ugandans identification documents though she followed keenly the evolution of Fred Rigyema and Paul Kagame(Rwandese leaders in Museveni guerilla).

1983: At 22, like any other human raised in another land than his, Rose decided to travel to Rwanda . She wanted to discover her ancestor's land but that was not to be because she was turned away at the Gatuna border by Rwandese immigration officials after realizing that she was an exiled Tutsi.
Two months later, she returned with a lady friend at the same border crossing point but with Ugandans passports. They proceeded to Kigali for one week just to regret the reason of their trip. The were publicly insulted in Kigali streets because of their Tutsi morphology. Sometimes they were reffered to as INYENZI (cockroaches) or Mwami wives(Kings wives that were fought in 1959).

1985: Rose traveled to Kenya in search of a teaching job. She stayed at her aunt's place where she met David Kabuye an exiled tutsi Rwandan living in Nairobi who was a frequent visitor to her Aunt's home.

1986: Museveni with the help of Rwandans like Fred Rigyema and Paul Kagame takes over leadership in Uganda . Fred Rigyema was the man in charge of the Army and Kagame in charge of the Intelligence service. Rose is recommended to Fred Rigyema by her aunt from Kenya to join the Ugandan forces. After her military training she given the rank of lieutenant under Major NUWE AMANYA MUSHEGA and later became aide-de-camp to Major General Elly TUMWINE who also accommodate her in kololo Kampala .

1987: David Kabuye just like Rose joins the Rwandan Patriotic Front - RPF - and it's military arm Rwandan's Patriotic Army -RPA - at the rank of captain. The RPA had a wide support of trained Rwandans refugees already serving in the Ugandan's Army.
Pressure is mounting in Uganda against Museveni, politicians opposed to him are implying that he is in the power to create a Tutsi Rwandan's state in Ugandans boundaries, reason why he appointed Rwandans refugees to some of the most powerful position in the security services (Fred Rigyema and Paul kagame). For the sake of his political survival, Museveni who has Rwandans roots, promised to Fred Rigyema that he woul back any expedition to overthrow the Juvenal Habyarimana's Hutu lead regime in Rwanda . He also sent Kagame for further military training at Fort Leavenworth Kansas USA to get rid of Rwandans holding powerful position in his government.

1989: Rose Kanyange marries David Kabuye and becomes therefore Rose Kabuye. They get their first child the same year.

1990: While Kagame is still the US , Fred Rigyema with the benediction of Museveni who is attending together with Habyarimana a United Nations summit in New York , gathers 4000 Rwandans soldiers serving in the Ugandan's army on September 30 th in a Kampala suburb. Rose joins them in the night of 1 st to 2 nd October when they start a front at Kagitumba border. Fred dies on the first day of the offensive and Kagame has to return hurriedly from America to lead the insurrection. Rose Kabuye act as RPA spokeswoman occasionally. Many are the times she would attend a press conference carrying her first born baby therefore attracting attention of photojournalists and sympathy all over the world especially the west. The RPA did not live long with its war success, it was defeated in most of the front by the national army backed by Belgium , France and the then Zaire . Rose is redeployed by the RPA to AKAGERA national Park where she was in charge of war causalities and malnutrition stricken RPA soldiers.

1993: A cease fire agreement is signed between the Rwandan government and the RPF. One of the articles stated that the RPF should avail a delegation of nominated Members of Parliament and battalion for their protection would go to Kigali .
Rose Kabuye is among the nominated MP's who represented the RPF. The old parliament building on top of the three hills overlooking Kigali is put at their disposal. At the Rank of major, Kabuye is in charge of the group Mps and the six hundred (600) men battalion for their protection. For the seven months that they spent in Kigali , Rose Kabuye never went down because of the population's hostility towards RPF. It is also important to note that at the beginning of 1993, Rose Kabuye was arrested by Order of Paul Kagame for more than a month before being a member of the RPF delegation to the peace talks in Arusha.

1994: On the 6 th of april, Rose and the rest of the delegation dine at the canteen. At 20hrs they receive the news of Habyarimana's plane crash(Kabuye's version of fact).
According to French intelligences, it's believed that after dining, Rose received a call from Kagame ordering her together with her 'Network Commando' to execute their mission(shooting down habyarimana's plane).
Surrounded by the national army, Rose Kabuye and her people had no other choice than to descend into the bunker of the old parliament building to survive the bombing that ensured soon Habyarimana death's announcement. The bombing lasted three days before the United Nations Mission in Rwanda MINUAR came to rescue the RPF delegation by setting up a protection cordon around the old parliament. Rose Kabuye kept her people and the influx of almost three thousands Tutsis victim of atrocities in Kigali . The situation lasted one and a half month before a battalion of the RPA arrived in Kigali to evacuate them. In july of the same year, after the RPF took over the country, Kabuye served as mayor of Kigali .
