Since its formal integration on March 29, 2022, into the East African community, EAC, the Democratic Republic of Congo has not been an integral part. It took more than a year for the Congolese to finally understand what this integration meant. On September 1, all Congolese passengers landing at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi were granted free entry. This measure resulted from the decision of Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto to allow free movement between the DRC and Kenya.
Then came the turn of the United Republic of Tanzania. Through a correspondence from the Tanzanian embassy in Kinshasa dated August 25, 2023 addressed to the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of foreign affairs, the Tanzanian government allowed Congolese to enter Tanzania visa free.
This decision opens the free movement of people and their goods within the EAC and the central corridor. It will facilitate and contribute enormously to the mission assigned to the Central Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency, CCTTFA through its Executive Secretary, Congolese Lawyer Flory Okanju Okongo.
CCTTFA, a technical support body specializing in the development of multimodal transport infrastructures within the Central Corridor, has always worked with the governments of 5 countries forming this commercial zone to succeed in the mission of bringing people together, facilitating transport transits and promote local investment.
The visa exemption by Kenya and Tanzania completes the free movement of Congolese citizens within the Central Corridor. Apart from the visa exemption measure, the DRC will benefit from other advantages, notably in taxes, customs duties, and business establishments.
